Published in 1993, shortly after the radical change which overthrew a seemingly fixed political and social structure, Anne Duden’s ‘Steinschlag’ is a poetic text marked by radical departures from fixed linguistic structures. The discourse of the ‘Deutsche Wende’, and of other moments such as ‘Deutschland im Herbst’ or the Prague Spring, has left its mark on the text in echoes of meteorological metaphors and other modes of speech which have pervaded the discourse of revolution from the French Revolution on. The following reading traces the shifts of perspective that the poem performs in highlighting meteorological metaphors and then, in the closing word of the striking opening section, leaving behind these features of current discourse in a self-referential shift towards poetic discourse.
