Zusammenfassung

The contribution deals with the approach of a retrospective genealogy that Reinhard Schulze develops and applies in his book The Quran and the Genealogy of Islam. The discussion of this approach follows three distinctions: 1. Concept and matter, 2. past and present as well as 3. differentiation and interaction. In doing so, the three distinctions sacred/profane, transcendent/immanent and religious/secular that Reinhard Schulze uses in his retrospective genealogy are connected to the theory of societal differentiation, which is the background of the differentiation of religion.
