The events surrounding the Iranian presidential election of 2009 were often referred to as the ‘Twitter revolution’ in Western media, which regarded social media as crucial to developments. This paper argues that social media were far less important or necessary to explain the immediate events in the summer of 2009 than is generally assumed. They are, however, key drivers of the long-term democratisation process in the Islamic Republic of Iran. This is their central importance that must not be underestimated, as the future is bound to show.
