In the form of an essayistically pointed update of the assessment, initiated in 2008 by Poya and Reinkowski, of the “unease felt in Islamwissenschaft,” the present contribution attempts to describe the challenges the discipline has to face in a time of increased Islamophobia and (neo)Orientalism, triggered by worldwide Islamist terrorism and large-scale immigration of ‘Oriental’ refugees. It also seeks to fathom the possibilities the discipline has to react to these challenges in a setting characterised by corporatised academia, media-dominated public discourse, the fragmentation of Western societies, and the constraints of a hegemonic neoliberal market ideology.
