Abstract

French theologians are not often included in surveys of comparative theology, yet their contribution is an important part of the early history of comparative theology. This chapter surveys contributions by a number of theologians in the movement of Nouvelle théologie who used the idea of ressourcement to include non-Christian sources for theological reflection between 1935 and 1960. We discuss Jean Daniélou SJ as representative of a new approach to Judaism, not only as a source for early Christianity, but also as a living tradition. Next, we discuss Louis Massignon and Georges Anawati as representatives of a new engagement with the world of Islam, and Jules Monchanin as a model of spiritual encounter with Hinduism. Finally, we discuss the contributions by Henri de Lubac to comparative theological study of Buddhism.
