Zusammenfassung
Johann Gottfried Wetzstein contributed in many respects to the knowledge of Syria. Although a great career at a German university eluded him, he maintained close contacts to a network of Orientalists, many of them his former students. This article provides a general assessment of Wetzstein’s contribution to the understanding of Syrian geography, ethnography and culture and discusses his position among German Orientalists.
