From humble beginnings, Pentecostalism in Indonesia has grown to possibly over 9.45 million people. Despite the fact that the accuracy of statistical data is questionable, the growth trend is clear. In major cities, such as Jakarta, Surabaya, Semarang and Medan, thousands of people experience vibrant worship and dynamic preaching in Pentecostal churches in Sunday services, while in revival meetings tens of thousands flock to the open fields with expectations of experiencing miracles and healings. Secular media even credits Pentecostalism as having a powerful impact on the surge of Christianity in Indonesia. This growth makes the study of Pentecostalism in Indonesia not only interesting, but important as well. Using two historical case studies, this chapter examines the rise of charismatic Christianity in Indonesia. It then provides a geographical and demographical analysis of Pentecostalism in Indonesia and reasons for the phenomenal growth, including gender, age, ancestry, education, and income. Finally, it explores challenges facing the contemporary Pentecostal movement, such as identity crisis, denominational divisions, and religious persecution.
