The impact of Pentecostalism on Papua New Guinea (png) has been profound. While Roman Catholic Marist fathers and London Missionary Society missionaries first introduced Christianity during the 19th century, Pentecostalism’s arrival in the second half of the 20th century led to a contextualisation of Christianity previously unrealised. A major contribution of Pentecostalism is its emphasis on the “power-filled” gospel, which correlates on multiple levels with the png worldview. Pentecostal Christians, pastors and evangelists emphasised, and more importantly demonstrated, the power of God over evil spirits, the baptism and empowerment of all believers through the Holy Spirit, as well as a gospel message confirmed by miraculous signs. The focus on the omnipotence of God, among other significant socio-cultural and historical factors, has resulted in Pentecostalism encompassing 1.8 million, or 20 percent of png’s total population. Furthermore, elements of charismatic worship and theology have also been adopted into many evangelical and mainline churches. With the goal of examining the impact of Pentecostalism in png, the first section of this chapter will explore the historical and socio-cultural context of png Pentecostalism. The second portion will highlight the primary Pentecostal movements ministering in png, as well some key theological contributions.
