Abstract

In 2012, the brutal gang rape of a 23-year-old physiotherapy student in Delhi triggered massive protests across India. The Nirbhaya case, as it came to be known, led to death sentences for the four men involved and the creation of the Criminal Law Amendment Act (which was subsequently passed on 19 March 2013). Local and national responses to the Nirbhaya case reveal various dimensions of resilience. These dimensions – community resources and networks, and institutional and legal reforms – all help to show how resiliency has been, and can be, a key determinant in strengthening social cohesion and the rule of law, thereby reinforcing unity in protecting women’s rights through a strong community-based approach.
