Since 2014, an on-going fwf-funded research project led by Achim Hölter (P 26814 – Ludwig Tieck’s Library. Anatomy of a Romantic and Comparatist Book Collection) has set about to investigate the auction of Tieck’s library, locate the present whereabouts of the books, analyse the identified volumes wherever possible, and to virtually reconstruct Tieck’s library in a database specifically designed for that purpose. This paper details our findings in the Austrian National Library (Österreichische Nationalbibliothek – önb), whose predecessor, the k.k. Hofbibliothek, had taken part in the auction in 1849. In the interest of European and international book history, to which the project wants to contribute, the önb holdings are particularly important because they consist of a representative portion of Tieck’s library, are undamaged by war or other causes, and have, to a large extent, already been digitised.
