Abstract

The White Deer Grotto Academy is usually understood as the basic model for most Confucian academies after the Song dynasty. Accordingly references to the academy, its revival, and especially the White Deer Grotto Academy Articles of Learning, can be found in many educational institutions in East Asia. While the story of the academy and its regulations were embraced by many Korean scholars, interpretation and usage of both differ greatly in individual cases. The Articles of Learning were quite early viewed as general educational guidelines, but were often surpassed in importance by the Elementary Learning. With the rise of the academy system in Korea, the Articles became more directly connected to Confucian academies and found widespread usage as educational regulations hung in lecture halls among other admonitions. In this role the Articles were also used in rituals and aesthetic expressions creating a connection between the White Deer Grotto Academy and Korean academies. Finally, the adoption and adaptation of the Articles of Learning shows not only how the White Deer Grotto Academy came to be viewed as the basic model of the Confucian academy in among Korean scholars, but also how this model became re-contextualized to meet their individual needs and circumstances.
