Abstract

Colonial dictionaries in the Highland Maya language K’iche’ exhibit certain formal characteristics which hamper their systematic analysis. Lexical entries often correlate multiple Spanish and K’iche’ translations and K’iche’ lemmata are frequently given as complex forms in unstandardised orthographies. This chapter provides an overview of K’iche’ missionary lexicography and discusses the methodological implications of turning colonial vocabularies into usable reference dictionaries and searchable digital corpora.
