Abstract

While Arnheim (1986) understands the relationship of thinking and perception I believe that how one knows what one knows through the creative photographic act is similar to the creative decisions made when making videos or doing academic arts-based research which affects one’s teaching of art education. I am one person and through time and engagement in all of these have shown me that the lines have become blurred or non-existent. Like McLuhan (1964), I am the medium through which the message can be conveyed. The photographic artist becomes the medium and the message is the artistic research/photograph that takes the form of an exhibition/publication or academic publication which in the end affects the teaching and learning of art and art education. The purpose of this chapter is to answer the following questions: How does my artistic photographic research practise affect my teaching Art Education? What are the parallels between my artistic photographic research and my academic research? How can this photographic artist/researcher affect the teaching of Art Education?
