Abstract

The aim of this chapter is to describe the creation, implementation and evaluation of training programs for the early identification of children on the autism spectrum in Brazilian public health. It summarises the experience of community health agents (ACSs, as the latter are abbreviated in Portuguese) in training programs for the early identification of autism and inclusive practices (i.e., links between the community and health services). The urgency of the early identification and treatment of ASD is to improve the chances of integrating those children into various social contexts (e.g., health related, community related and educational), as recommended by the 1994 Salamanca Statement. In Brazil, scientific studies show developmental advantages for children on the spectrum of inclusion in schooling. Positive early childhood development is an important determinant of individual health and establishes an essential foundation for future well-being and academic success.
