In this chapter, Mehmet Kalpaklı examines a little-known poem by an Ottoman poet and intellectual Veysî (d.1628) about the breakdown of the Ottoman state and society in the seventeenth century. Veysî’s poem, as an important contribution to the Ottoman advice (nasihat) literature, also demonstrates the need to pay more attention to literary and poetic sources in Ottoman historical studies.
