This chapter introduces the study reported in the work, an examination of two major Scottish song collections: The Greig-Duncan Folk Song Collection and the Scots song material in the School of Scottish Studies Archives (as digitised and re-catalogued by Tobar an Dualchais/Kist o Riches). The study is a quantitative examination of the demography of the contributors and of the information they give about song transmission. The cultural and historical framework of the study is set out in terms of tradition versus modernity. In order to systematise and quantify sometimes poor quality data, a variety of approaches are taken.
