Abstract

This chapter addresses the claim made in the prior literature that Gavin Greig and Rev. James Duncan were remiss in not seeking out Traveller contributors, as the School of Scottish Studies later did. After a brief account of the history of the Travellers and the difficulty of identifying them in the historical record, the information about all itinerant contributors and song sources in The Greig-Duncan Folk Song Collection is examined. Some comparisons are made between the Greig-Duncan corpus and the material collected from Travellers by the School of Scottish Studies. No support is found for the idea that Greig and Duncan could have collected a richer body of material had they recruited more Travellers.
