Résumé

Documents concerning the participation of the Eastern Patriarchs Makarios III ibn al-Zaʿīm of the Antiochian Church and Paisius of Alexandria at the Church council of 1666–1667 in Moscow shed light on the Muscovite authorities’ vision of the role of the Eastern Churches as ultimate arbitrators in confessional issues. This position resulted from the long and painful crisis opposing Patriarch Nikon to the Russian tsar. The Eastern patriarchs’ presence at the council helped to obtain a canonically sound solution, ending the long vacancy of the Russian patriarchal seat. Beyond this immediate achievement, the assembly attempted to restructure the relations between the Church and the Muscovite state by underlying the role of the Russian monarch as the heir of the Byzantine emperors who had presided over the ecumenical councils. The role of Simeon of Polotsk is also discussed, in this context.
