Abstract

India has one of the youngest populations in the world and its youth are touted to be the torchbearers of nation building and social change. However, challenges like unemployment, inequality and social fragmentation are making the Indian youth quite restless. In this scenario, it is important that they continue to believe in and practice ‘Democracy in Everyday Life’ (DIEL). This chapter narrates a study of using ‘Community Based Participatory Research’ (CBPR) for building youth consciousness on DIEL. Carried out with young college students, this study attempted to gauge their perceptions of DIEL in general, and ‘identity’ (as part of DIEL) in particular. Doing so, it enabled them to think and reflect critically on DIEL processes and aspects of identity; its impact on the socio-political development of the country; and, most importantly, their own contribution towards nation building.
