There is no clear definition for what a protection miracle is. They appear differently in different sources and historians have used protection miracles to study a variety of elements of life in the Middle Ages. This study explores protection miracles such as freedom from incarceration and torture, rescue from drowning, and protection from thieves to explore moments in time in the volatile political history of fourteenth-century Provence.
