Abstract

How would the unusual language that Philippians uses about afterlife have sounded to people in Philippi? This chapter explores the extent and nature of the representation of afterlife on funerary monuments from Philippi and its surrounding territory. The textual and pictorial evidence in the set of published monuments is analysed, with particular attention being given to riders, banquet scenes, and the use of the term ‘hero/ine’. Language in Paul’s letter is shown to have interesting points of comparison with local representation of afterlife.
