Abstract

The national context of Shakespeare’s so-called “Scottish play” has frequently been underplayed in stage versions. Cinematic adaptations show a similar inability to represent Scotland as a nation. It is either overlooked, or reduced to a series of kitsch signifiers. Even recent trends in Scottish cinema are unlikely to foster a Scottish Macbeth in a context of global cinematic production and distribution.
