Abstract

Postcolonial theory may be used to explore the direction of Scottish and Irish cultural production in film and theatre. The political assessment of the relative merits of films such as Braveheart and Michael Collins reveals how cultural identity is shaped and challenged by contemporary re-imaginings of history. However, the effects of political devolution vary greatly: the lively cultural critique current in Scottish drama is not matched by a similar movement in Scottish cinema.
