Abstract

Until recently, writing by Scottish women has often gone unrecognised, and Scottishness has often been equated with maleness. Feminist analysis of the work of Margaret Oliphant, in particular of her novel Kirsteen, reveals some of the ways in which women function as a “muted group” within a dominant male discourse.
