Abstract

Beveridge and Turnbull’s Eclipse of Scottish Culture prescribes a particular identity to philosophy conducted in Scotland. Not only docs this stipulation restrict individual cultural and intellectual freedom, it also mistakenly assumes that there can be radically distinct national traditions of philosophy. Like the tenns “Anglo-American” and “Continental” philosophy, “Scottish philosophy” is merely a projection of political geography onto intellectual life.
