Abstract
In a detailed analysis of the form of “Wandering Rocks”, this essay shows how the episode employs a chiastic structure, one which aligns itself with analogous patterns to be found throughout Joyce’s writings. The essay reflects upon the way in which, in this episode as elsewhere in Ulysses, Joyce’s controlling structures are in constant tension with the reader’s sense of their indeterminacy, how these elusive patterns are suggested rather than defined in the novel by the procedures of a book which such structures are far from allowed to govern outright.
