Abstract

Far from being an episode which concerns itself merely with the ‘generic modern city’, this essay argues that “Wandering Rocks” is deeply bound up with the political and cultural specificities of Joyce’s Dublin, a city characterised by the continuing presence of its history in the very fabric of the ‘colonial metropolis’. In a detailed examination of the historical and historiographical fabric of the episode, the essay shows how Dublin’s colonial past is continually evoked in Joyce’s treatment of its colonial present.
