Abstract

In this opening chapter, we invite the reader on a journey to explore the possibilities of doing rebellious research in and beyond the academy. It’s about inspiring a reconnection with ourselves as rebels and revelling in acts of rebellion as researchers and writers, considering what this means for transgressing disciplinary boundaries and for disrupting ways of knowing, doing and being in academia and beyond. For many of us, writing means looking beyond past practices and taking risks at every turn. For others, writing invites departures into new ways of being and becoming academic writers by breaking free from orthodoxies, rebelling against and breaking free of patriarchy. Either way, doing theory differently, writing differently, researching and leading differently requires the will and capacity to depart radically by entangling with unruliness, and with fugitive and mutinous potentials, to dis/orient our engagements in academia, somewhere off the page. In this chapter we situate open possibilities for what the ‘process’ of writing against the current might comprise, and for what the ‘product’ of academic writing might yet come to be.
