Abstract

Inspired by the Riot Grrrl manifesto ‘Because’ published in 1991 by Kathleen Hanna, the lead singer of the underground punk feminist band Bikini Kill, Chapter 6 is a statement of beliefs about what, how, by whom and for whom, when, where and why departing radically in academic writing might become a possible ‘something’. Each statement begins with the word ‘because’; because the intention is to lay out the routes and the roots of the cause we yearn to become. The word ‘manifesto’ fits this intention in so far as the chapters in Part 2 exemplify such yearning towards the radical; that is, a return in academy writing to the origins and roots of life by route of the radical.
