Abstract

This article brings together for the first time a collection of poems written to celebrate the famous Nymphaeum of the Villa Giulia, the villa of Pope Julius III in Rome. Some of the verses were written by Giovanni Francesco Commendone, and the Pope ordered them to be engraved in the Nymphaeum. Other poems were written by Ippolito and Lelio Capilupi, Joachim Du Bellay, Fausto Sabeo, Miguel da Silva, Lorenzo Gambara, Francesco Franchini, and Andreas Masius. An examination of these poems reveals their continuity with a well-known tradition of poetic composition about statues of sleeping nymphs, established decades earlier and found in the gardens of Angelo Colocci, Johann Goritz, and the Vatican. The article thus highlights the fundamental use of Renaissance villa gardens for poetic composition and the inseparability between the material and spatial dimension of the Renaissance garden and the literary imagination it helped to create.
