In São Tomé and Príncipe the opposition candidate Carlos Vila Nova won the final ballot of the presidential elections in September 2021. The runoff was delayed for a month due to a stalemate in the Constitutional Court, since the five judges issued opposite verdicts in response to a recount request on the grounds of alleged irregularities by the third most voted candidate in the first election round in July. The government signed two ambitious agreements with foreign investors for the construction of a large free-trade zone and a deep-sea container port respectively. In April India became the eleventh country with a resident ambassador in São Tomé.
