Abstract

This chapter explores the critical advice and guidance provided by supervisors in thesis development and in preparing for the final examination. An underlying theme is how supervisors’ interventions can improve the doctoral researcher’s output and examination experience. The chapter suggests how the role of supervisors: supports the researcher to become independent and produce high quality research; enables them to generate a well-argued thesis; and contributes to preparation for the examination. It concludes by asserting that supervisors’ interventions can raise researchers’ awareness of the interdependence of the thesis and oral in the final examination, thereby increasing their confidence.
