National Louis University (NLU), a broad-access and innovative Hispanic-serving institution (HSI) in the urban setting of downtown Chicago, Illinois, was poised for significant growth in its online programming over the last 10 years. To meet growing demand, the institution set a plan in motion to address internal capacity by carefully designing evidence-based learning experiences for online students through an agile and responsive system of course design and project management. This system helped the institution go from designing under 10 courses per year to nearly 100 within a 5-year timespan, with positive gains in persistence and student satisfaction. Furthermore, the institution developed the capacity to scale up or down the number of courses depending upon institutional needs. Institutions interested in efficiently scaling their course design system can adopt all or parts of NLU’s model to realize similar benefits and, ultimately, improve the experience of students who are learning in online environments.
