Abstract

This offering is written in response to the chapter written by Kilgo and Pennell titled “Flipping the Narrative: Using Queer and Trans Young Adult Literature as a Form of Resistance.” Queer and trans YA literature can offer vital opportunities for queer students who do not often see their stories centered in their schooling. When done well, these books create vital space for restorying. Queer and trans YA literature that is grounded in joy and authentic experiences can empower students to envision their own stories outside of the white heteropatriarchal norms that largely dominate educational institutions. Educators can also use these texts along with the offerings of queer theory to learn how to read normative texts ‘against the grain,’ creating a framework for students to analyze and discuss the everyday racism, sexism, and anti-queer violence all around them.
