Abstract

In this chapter, we examine the connection of trials in courtrooms and ‘trials’ on the theatre stage. By analysing the aesthetics of three theatre plays ranging from 1960’s documentary theatre to today’s post-dramatic genre, this chapter interrogates the theatre as an extra-juridical venue, commenting on real-life legal system and procedures. It demonstrates how re-enactments and pre-enactments of criminal trials dealing with international atrocities of the 20th and 21st centuries engage with the configuration of justice and law by involving the audience in an aesthetic judgement of accountability.
