Abstract

This chapter does two things. The first is to explore the corporatist dimension of Aristotle’s social thought. This involves considering what he has to say about intermediate groups or societies (koinōniai), which occupy a social space mid-way between the family or household on the one hand, and what G. W. F. Hegel, following Aristotle, refers to as ‘the strictly political state’ on the other. This space is characterised by Hegel as ‘civil society’, and by Hannah Arendt as the realm of ‘the social’. The second is to take a fresh look at Aristotle’s theory of justice from the standpoint of the idea of a politics of recognition. I argue that there is a recognitive dimension to Aristotle’s views on justice, which has often been overlooked. These two themes of the chapter are related. I suggest that, for Aristotle, the demand for recognition, or for recognitive justice, can take place within the various different types of koinōnia that he identifies.
