Abstract

Scientific object: This article refers to the history of the Galician press in the nineteenth century. It discusses the importance of Parisian Fashion Daily (Dziennik Mód Paryskich) in propagating democratic ideas in Polish society living under the Austrian Partition. Despite the “fashion and tailoring” character of the magazine, it played an important role in spreading political awareness. Particular attention is also paid to the unique and tragic history of the Dziennik Mód Paryskich with regard to the events of the Spring of Nations. The aim of the article is not only to recall the little-known periodical, but to present its political role during the partition of the Polish nation.

Research methods: The Author used an analysis of the literary criticism and the content of the press.

Results and conclusions: The result of the research is a multifaceted analysis of the conditions for the development of the Polish press in the mid-19th century. Dziennik Mód Paryskich is a unique example of the struggle for a free press in difficult political conditions.

Cognitive value: The article may be of interest to media historians and researchers of political communication in its regional context.
