Despite the push to decolonize steampunk literature for adults, the attempts to do so for literature aimed at young adults has not completely worked. By looking at Gail Carriger’s Finishing School and Custard Protocol series, this chapter examines how the British Empire is presented in these works, examining both the place and persons of the Empire. Carriger’s use of the Supernatural allows for some delicate statements regarding colonization, but ultimately, fails to fully denounce the efforts of the British Empire to exploit and assimilate non-British peoples.
