Abstract

My doctoral journey was motivated by my experiences working as a classroom teacher. During this experience I observed many students thriving despite challenging social and/or personal circumstances. Subsequently, I was motivated to shift the rhetoric beyond the challenges students from low socioeconomic backgrounds encounter to the strategies and practices they adopted to bolster their personal resilience. In this chapter, I identify how this personal interest in the topic acted as a motivation throughout my doctoral journey. In addition, several other factors that enabled a continued motivation throughout the long and often lonely doctoral journey are highlighted. These factors include a support team, having breaks, taking care of one’s wellbeing, and breaking the work into small chunks to avoid feeling overwhelmed. The chapter concludes with three recommendations that I would give to those brave individuals who are considering embarking on their doctoral journey.
