Learning assessments for national and international comparisons incur a specialist, academic approach to restrict thinking and learning. Increased reliance on technology in the pandemic now means many learning assignments and assessments happen on-line and are marked by machines, which encourage tick-box responses and less opportunity to think and express creatively. Moreover, a lack of appropriate regulation of web content means tech giants control information, which is often biased or unsuitable for student engagement to influence learning in dangerous ways. The chapter discusses these issues and predicts that only a more generalist approach, that widens knowledge, competencies and opportunities, will provide a safer, more accurate information source for all teachers, learners and their carers.
