Abstract

Rural students comprise 30% of the K-12 population in the United States. Rural schools and their students are an essential element in the composition and sustainability of the thousands of small towns and villages that dot the American landscape. This chapter looks at the role of a university faculty member who serves as a teacher at a remote and rural public school to simultaneously support diversity/global education instruction and conduct academic research on rural schools and communities. The outcomes associated with this intervention have been overwhelmingly positive, even when considering financial costs and travel time to remote school locations.
