Abstract

This chapter investigates how 4th/10th century historical and literary sources assess Abbasid rulers as scholars, poets and authors. In particular, it looks at works that, rather than including rulers amongst other authors, consider them as a distinct category or a criterion for selection. Ibn al-Nadīm’s Kitāb al-fihrist provides a framework, which is then contrasted with Abū Bakr al-Ṣūlī’s Kitāb al-awrāq and Abū l-Faraj al-Iṣfahānī’s Kitāb al-aghānī.
