Abstract

In Luzzatto’s time, prudence was still a much-debated topic, conceived less as a moral virtue and more as a political virtue. In fact, the Venetian Jewish community’s need to survive motivated them to deal prudently with the political authorities on the one side and to be well aware of the principles of political prudence to which the authorities resorted in dealing with the Jews on the other.
