Abstract

This chapter explores the benefits, challenges, and impacts of e-texts on student learning within online education. E-texts provide many advantages, such as enhanced accessibility, flexibility, customization options, up-to-date content, interactive and collaborative learning opportunities, adaptive learning features, and cost-effectiveness in online education. Nevertheless, it is crucial to recognize the challenges associated with e-texts, such as students’ inclination towards print texts, potential distractions, information overload, and technological barriers. The impact of e-texts on the student learning experience and academic performance remains debatable, as studies have yielded inconsistent results. Factors such as student characteristics, the interactive features of e-texts, and the role of instructors significantly influence the outcomes associated with e-text usage. Educators are provided with practical suggestions to optimize the advantages of e-texts while effectively tackling challenges, thereby improving students’ overall online learning experience.
