Chapter 3: the practice of tacking describes in detail the particular way of practising string figures with other people which inspired a tacktical methodology. Firstly, I outline the history of string figuring, dwelling on its role in engaging First Peoples during the early colonial decades. Then I describe the practice of tacking and offer some accounts of my experiences tacking with other people. I also look at some of the ways string figuring has already figured in contemporary art practices. Finally I propose five ‘conditions’ of tacking that link back to the cautions offered white feminists and others wanting to do work in this space that was outlined in chapter 1. I show how tacking is at its best when it is performed between strangers.
