Abstract

Chapter 4: tacking and tacktical presents the words “tacking” and “tacktical” as the key words and concepts of this book’s proposition. This chapter looks into the etymological relations of these words and the way in which those relations have a genetic force on what “tacking” and “tacktical” can signify and therefore do in, and for, the project. I present various meanings of the words ‘tacking’, ‘tacky’, tack’, ‘tactic’ and ‘tact’ and offer ‘tacktical’ as a neologism to describe the methodology that encompasses those meanings, albeit to varying degrees. The key meanings that emerge belong to the practice of tacking in sailing and tacking in sewing. One involves making a tactical manoeuvre against but also somewhat with a powerful force to move in a desirable direction, while the other involves attaching two or more elements together temporarily to assess whether they might work together.
