Abstract

Thousands of relief fragments with important scenes that were once depicted on the walls of the mortuary temple of King Djedkare were collected from the king’s complex in south Saqqara. These remnants provide significant information about the king’s reign, his relationship with the neighboring lands, and the achievements that were made during his reign and were recorded in the temple. One of these fragments shows an interesting relief; even though a large part of the scene is missing, it helps us to reconsider some ideas and information that have always been accepted as facts. These include, for example, the identification of cedar trees and the site where the ancient Egyptians obtained this type of wood during the third millennium B.C.E. Byblos is always presented as an exclusive place for obtaining cedar. This paper offers a different view on the best-quality types of wood acquired by the ancient Egyptians and presents a new region, closer to the ancient Egyptian borders, as a source for them.
