Abstract
Chapter 2 focuses on developing the two frameworks within which District 9 is analysed in this book: analogue aesthetics and ruin aesthetics. Here the concepts of analogue nostalgia and authenticity are clarified as part of a larger nostalgic tendency in popular visual culture. The important terms of the post-industrial sublime and the formless are likewise explained in terms of how they are used in the analyses to come, as concepts that allow me to bring to light how District 9 portrays Johannesburg as urban landscape.
