Abstract

The status ambiguitas turns on the question of how the meaning of a law or a legal document must be construed when the wording admits of two interpretations. In such a case, Cicero advised to adopt the more useful, honourable, or compelling view, and that is what Pomponius, Julian, and Marcellus do in D. 50.17.20, 64, and 192.1 respectively.
