In this chapter I recommend teaching STEAM through transdisciplinary competencies, including critical thinking, problem solving, creative thinking, and social and emotional skills. I offer several suggestions for effectively teaching these competencies, which include incorporating opportunities to foster critical thinking in the curriculum, nurturing essential attitudes and dispositions for both critical thinking and social and emotional learning, employing design thinking to teach problem-solving skills, prioritizing empathy as an integral part of the design thinking process, and facilitating collaboration within and across disciplines. By teaching transdisciplinary competencies, students can develop into critical thinkers and responsible global citizens.
